It also has two choices to help deal with ghost types in Bite or Shadow Ball. The only bad side is that it takes until level 22 to get a 2-tile in Quick Attack, but it's largely a non-issue when you're OHKOing most things. It even starts the game off with 47 PP-worth in normal moves as well Helping Hand, which if you petrify a boss you can use to +10 your partner's offenses for free and let them go to town. Sure Skitty gets Normalize, but what does that do for it besides a STAB full-room attack or STAB ranged moves? Other starters can have those without being forced to have everything normal typed, and other than those you know what Skitty's gonna be using? Normal typed moves, because normal moves inherently have the largest quantity of PP, and moves with high PP (with STAB) are more important than moves with high base power (with STAB), so Normalize largely ends up unused except in specific circumstances.Įevee, having Adaptability, makes it hit anything that doesn't resist normal really hard (OHKOing dungeon enemies for most of the story with a power band), and even what resists normal still gets a big enough chunk out of it that your partner can often follow-up with a 2-tile to finish them off. Gonna disagree on Skitty being the best hero, The only things it offers over Eevee is a bit higher base stats/stat growth, Sing (but sleep is a terrible status ailment in PMD as it breaks in very few turns very often), and STAB Blizzard/ranged moves. Normalize mostly ends up reading "all your moves get STAB", and as a defensive typing Normal is absolutely amazing in this game. The best starter in the game is Skitty, and that's out of question IMO. In the partner position they are better because of Quick Attack, (Charge +) Discharge, and Agility in Pikachu's case (also, partners tend to do little in the game). I'd say that the worst starters after Phanpy are the Electric types in the leader position: they do have Discharge ofc, but their coverage (Pikachu's in particular) is pretty meh, and Lightningrod makes some dungeons a living hell. I recommend a Skitty leader + Treecko partner combo, because Skitty is the best of the bunch, and Treecko has got a lot of great support moves (Agility, Quick Attack) and can deal with most enemies that give Skitty trouble with its Grass draining moves.Īs far as your question goes, I'd say that apart from Phanpy and partner Eevee, most starters are about equal in terms of power. It's much more difficult this way, but if you pick a good starter combo you should be able to beat the game. Or don't, it's more infuriating than challenging.ĭo you want a more interesting challenge? Play without linked moves. Do you want a challenge? Play as Phanpy, and have Eevee as a partner.
